While it is (unfortunately) still legal to sell cats through pet shops in the UK, we at Pet Mania are of the opinion that pet shops are not the right environment for cats to be kept in while awaiting new homes.

For free cats, please consider helping one of the many rescue organisations that re-homes unwanted cats. Frequently a cat from one of these organisations will have received a proper diet and care, and more often than not the cat has also been wormed and vaccinated. By giving a small donation in return, you will help these organisations to continue their important work, which often are carried out by volunteers.

Nowadays there are less and less pet shops stocking live birds, particularly since the import-ban for birds from the wild into EU and the UK came into effect a few years ago and the supply for many shops dried up. We have never sold wild-caught birds here at Pet Mania, and now, as before, we are regularly supplied with top quality birds from breeders both local to us and from different parts of the UK.

We at Pet Mania think there are too many hand-reared baby parrots being sold to new owners without informing them properly of what they can expect from their baby parrot when it grows up. This is causing a lot of frustration for the new parrot owner and the parrot as well. Sadly, the newspapers are full of adverts for “second-hand” parrots which were bought on impulse by owners who fell for their cuddliness and tameness when they saw the parrot in a pet shop, then later realised that they do not have the spare time required in order to keep a bird imprinted on humans happy. For these reasons you will only occasionally see any hand-reared parrots being offered for sale at Pet Mania, and certain species, namely Cockatoos, we feel are totally unsuitable as hand-reared pet parrots and will never be offered for sale as hand-reared pet companions by us.

Since the early days, reptiles have always played an important role at Pet Mania. In recent years, reptiles & exotics have become increasingly popular as pets amongst people from all backgrounds and societies and as the demand and sales of reptiles were increasing, we at Pet Mania have seen the need for more space for reptiles.

Pet Mania did not have any more space available, so the decision was made to expand the reptile section and move into 14 Mill Lane, a few buildings further up the road from Pet Mania`s main shop.

The rest is history, and since December 2007 “The Reptile House” has offered a fantastic selection of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates to enthusiasts all over the north-east and the rest of the UK.

The Reptile House receives two consignments of live and frozen food every week year-round, ensuring that the foods you provide to your beloved reptiles are always fresh. We stock various types of vivariums, heat and light-systems, thermostats and everything else imaginable.

Rest assured that you will only be given sound advice on how to correctly keep your reptiles from the staff at The Reptile House. We will not attempt to sell you something you do not need to care for your new pet. Neither will we sell you any animal unless we are 100% certain that you are able to provide it with the correct conditions. If you shop around for the cheapest possible complete set-up, be aware that a lot of establishments who sell reptiles don`t have any experience and real knowledge about reptiles, and frequently will quote you as low a price as possible based on inadequate equipment. One every-day example of bad advice is “Light-bulb as a heating device”

Most reptiles commonly kept in captivity are from tropical parts of the world, with high ambient temperatures 24 hours a day. The average UK home is centrally heated with either none or very low heat on at night, much lower than it will ever get in most places where our reptiles originate from. It is pretty self-explanatory that if your reptiles cage is heated by means of a light-bulb, the temperature within will drop instantly when the light-bulb is switched off at night. Yet, we have new customers in the shop every day who`s been provided with exactly that; a light-bulb as the single source of heat to keep the reptiles warm! Sure, a light-bulb only costs £5 and a ceramic heater with holder and a thermostat will set you back app. £100. – A massive price-difference, but cut corners to save money like in this example and ultimately your pet will pay the price by getting ill, or if left long enough without correcting the issue; death. This is why we so strongly belive in showing our customers which technical equipment they need for their chosen pet, explain exactly why they need it, and show them how it works. There are no massive savings to be had anywhere for complete set-ups, so in our opinion anyone who instantly asks “What is the cheapest price you can offer for a full set-up for a Tortoise?” is more concerned about saving money rather than providing the right care for living creatures, and should probably never buy a pet at all… Ask us anything about reptiles and their care, and you will only get honest and upfront advice!

Tropical

Pet Mania has always been known for having a good selection of tropical fish. Besides the usual range of common and colourful community fish you would expect to find in a shop this size, you will always be able to see some rare fish at Pet Mania as well, some of which are imported to the UK for the first time!

There`s a multitude of colourful strains available in many different sizes, and we dare to say that our Discus are amongst the best available in the country. All our marine fish are acclimatised and quarantined prior to going on sale in the shop and we receive new stock from all parts of the world at least once per week although usually twice per week.
